mitt romney is down in the race but he's still got a chance. only down 3 points nationally in the journal/nbc poll. in key swing points he's pulling even in florida, down 1, closer in virginia, down 2, he's still down by 8 percentage points in our poll in the state of ohio, which is a problem for this reason. look at the map of swing states. if you look at the ones where mitt romney is running within 4 points of president obama, places like florida, virginia, iowa, missouri where he's ahead, north carolina where he's even or ahead, you add all those to the solid states for mitt montana and the leaning states for mitt romney, he's still only at 263 electorate votes. he needs to bring ohio or other swe swing state, nevada, new hampshire. he's got an unparallel opportunity tonight to come on stage with the president of the united states and make his case, larry. >> john, the wall street journal poll and others have shown that romney has closed the gap a little pit with president obama at least nationwide and some of the swing states. to what do you attribute this closi closing

likely voters the president leads 49% to 46% for romney. that's down net two points from two weeks ago when the president was up by five. to what to you attribute the movement, chuck todd? >> well, first of all, the more important number has always been the president sitting at 49% or 50%. i would go through his job approval rating at 49%, his ballot test at 49%, those converge, and that's what matters and 49% puts you in the, quote, re-elect zone. what's affecting romney, this is something we've been watching all year long. there is an enthusiasm gap among core republican voters among core democratic groups. overall there's a ten-point advantage among those republicans who call themselves nines or tens when on a scale of one to ten asked how interested they are in this election. there's been a ten-point gap pretty consistent all year. that's why for instance on the registered voter number, the president has a seven-point lead and it shrinks more than in half down to three, because the republican vote is more enthusiastic and they get through our likely voter screens. there's a lot of

't. gerri: well, you have broken it down a little bit for us. obama's deputy campaign manager saying romney never explained how he would pay for his massive new tax cuts for the wealthy. we hear the president hitting home time and time and time again. he keeps saying that romney wants to up raise taxes on the middle-class. it seems to me that that is just ignoring the facts. what do you say? >> it is based on a phony study by the tax policy center at the brookings institution that really made up their assumptions of what that romney plan is. we look at this from a more dynamic effect and see that the romney plan would actually increase economic growth and increase wages across the board which is going to more than offset any sort of reductions that people would see or increases people might see in their taxes. by and large people get a tax cut because after all these cutting tax rates across the board by 20 percent, and the biggest thing that will benefit the economy is also cutting the corporate tax rate. as you know, we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. all these things ad
